ABOUT

An anchor institution in the eastern GTA, UTSC combines the intimacy of a close-knit campus, the breadth of the liberal arts and the depth and rigor of one of the worldā€™s best research universities. Fostering a vibrant culture of community engagement, UTSC students cross academic as well as geographic boundaries in their pursuit of knowledge.

The dynamic campus life features more than 150 student groups. Located next to popular natural landmarks in Torontoā€™s greenest area, UTSC is situated in one of Torontoā€™s most diverse and multicultural neighbourhoods. New buildings by award-winning architects characterize UTSCā€™s transformational growth. The Toronto Pan Am Sports Centreā€”a world-class fitness and training centreā€”represents Canadaā€™s largest investment in amateur sport infrastructure, and opens to UTSC students and the neighbours in September 2014, and will host events for the 2015 Pan Am Parapan American Games.

Areas of Expertise

At UTSC you can customize your degree to delve deeply into the connections between subjects. This flexibility means you can easily cross traditional academic boundaries to create the learning experience you want.
Even better, at UTSC you donā€™t just learn from books and lectures. Many of our programs are unique at U of T for their combination of rigorous academic learning and hands-on experience. Volunteer opportunities, field courses and international exchanges mean you get first-hand understanding of what youā€™re learning.
If you want even more experience in your chosen field, you can apply to one of our many innovative co-op programs. Through your co-op, you can gain invaluable knowledge from experts working in your program of study ā€“ while getting paid!

Incoming Students

When you are expecting to complete 4 credits at the end of your current semester, you will need to declare your program of study on ACORN. You are encouraged to select the program or combination of programs that suit your academic interests:

  • 1 specialist program or
  • 2 major programs or
  • 1 major + 2 minors

A specialist program provides you with an in-depth, focused, and sophisticated understanding of a subject. Provides between 12-16 of your total 20 credits needed to graduate. A major program is designed to provide you with a concentrated understanding of an academic field. This provides you the opportunity to combine multiple programs across the arts, sciences, or economics. It is not enough to study one major program and earn your degree, so you will be expected to combine your major with an additional major program, or two minors. Of the 20 credits that you will need to graduate, one major program can satisfy between 7-8 credits, depending on the program. A minor program gives you the flexibility to diversify your academic portfolio. It will introduce you to a subject area, and allow you to augment skills that can be applied to other fields. One minor will provide 4 credits of your total 20 credits needed to graduate.

Career Planning

The Academic Advising and Career Centre provides numerous services for students such as:

  • counselling on choosing the right academic program
  • preparing for professional programs and graduate school
  • workshops on improving study skills
  • career exploration and planning
  • job search and employment preparation

Sports

Varsity programs are primarily run out of the St. George Campus, however, all U of T students are eligible to play. The exception is Men’s Varsity Baseball which is played at the U of T Scarborough campus.

Activities

UTSC also offers a variety of fitness and instructional programs such as yoga, pilates, karate, Cyclefit, Quidditch, personal training, etc.

Clubs

There are 205 recognized student clubs and associations. For a complete list and description consult the U of T Scarborough website.

Information Technology

The campus has over 600 computer workstations for student and teaching use. These workstations are clustered mainly in the IITS labs in the Bladen Wing, the Library, and in the Instructional Centre. Still others are in several small departmental computing labs. UTSC also provides students with extensive wireless coverage, including two main wireless networks (U of T and EduRoam) whether they are in class or in UTSC residences.

Cultural

The mandate of Cultural Affairs is to foster artistic and cultural activity, with the goal of enriching the life of all at U of T Scarborough beyond academics. Cultural Affairs presents an annual season of plays, concerts, readings, and special events for staff, faculty, students and the surrounding community.

Special Services

AccessAbility Services ensures policies, practices, procedures, and programs at U of T Scarborough are inclusive to students with disabilities. The office provides services and academic accommodations to students who have a documented learning, physical, sensory, mental health disability, or medical condition. Some examples of services include note taking, mobility assistance, and alternate exam arrangements.

Affiliated Institutions

U of T Scarborough offers joint programs in collaboration with Centennial College. It also partners with the Faculty of Applied Science Engineering at U of T for the Joint BSc + PEng program and the Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work at U of T for the join BSc + MSW program.

International Involvement

U of T Scarborough students have the opportunity to earn a portion of their degree on Student Exchange or Study Abroad programs in over 47 countries around the world.

Campus Tour

Tours are available every weekday at 11:00am. They begin at the Admissions & Student Recruitment Office and are approximately one hour long (or up to two hours if you’ve opted to visit the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre). Since tours are guided by our students, tours may not be possible during university holidays or during exam periods. If your preferred tour day is unavailable online, please phone us to see if we can arrange a special request tour!
